Big Flight; Out of Miami :( But Look Ahead!

Look at the darger greens on the radar image which scores high on the density scale.

Miami radar is looking impressive tonight with reflectivity levels reaching 25-30 dBZ in many areas representing a density 602-1788 birds per cubic kilometer. Weather has cleared up down here with the arrival of the cold front which is why the density recorded on radar is unusually high. Keys radar looks very much the same with slightly less birds being picked up by the radar beam.

A late afternoon visit to AD Barnes was awesome with birds everywhere you looked. While talking to Bill Boeringer and Brian Rapoza near the lake, Scarlet Tanagers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks would fly by nearly missing us. Bat-breasted and Tennessee Warblers were the common birds, very cool! More birds than you could get on, it was amazing. These birds seem to be feeding frantically as late as 7pm, which indicates to us that they were getting ready to fly tonight. Radar tonight proved our hunch correct with the impressive flight described above. New birds are on the way though, take a look at the SE mosaic radar to see that birds are moving behind the front in the northern portions of the state. West winds currently over Miami are not strong but may be strong enough to divert birds to the east a bit and into our area. Come back in the morning for radar images of the flight tonight.

Keep your eyes peeled for something rare, winds looks great for a vagrant from the west or the plains to pop up.
